Ivan Briz

Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Ivan Briz i Godino and I’m archaeologist. I work at the Institució Catalana de Recerca i Estudis Avançats, but my department actually depend on the Consell Superior d’Investigacions Cientifiques. I work on trying to understand relations between persons in hunter-gatherer’s societies: how they lived, how they where organized. At this moment I’m working in Tierra del Fuego (South America), student the Yámana society. And also at the north of England, trying to understand the Mesolithic from the British island.

Very near from our home (you can go by car although it’s in France, but Catalonia): The Prehistory Museum of Taltahull (in French: Tautavel).

I decided to become a scientist because I was really interested in understanding how people in the past lived. And how, change after change, we are how we are now.

Something I love about doing archaeology is that like in all research, but specially at fieldwork and because the diversity of questions and methods to apply, you can just do interesting things if you work and think like a team.

In my discography there is always... Tangos!! … So many years working in Argentina affects you..

Between my books there is always space for … a Patrick O’Brian novel about the British navy, Captain Aubrey and, specially, the Catalan and Irish surgeon and scientific called Maturin !

My favourite place to get lost is... the Beagle Channel, in Tierra del Fuego, on the south extreme of South America.

To escape there is nothing better than … practice my other passion: I’m a voluntary fireman!

A special city... York, where I lived for about two years.
