When you have to pick under rainstorm conditions …
Every 45 minutes or so, a burst of wind takes care that removing the tents is a funny thing. We have to store all tools in heavy wooden boxes, and wait in the forest, without shelter, the transport to Ushuaia.
But we are happy and pleased: the present year the results of the excavation have been higher than we expected. The large accumulations of fish that have appeared, allows us to see a diverse Yámana style of life that manages all marine coastal resources. And little by little, the map of activities developed within and outside the hut is being drawn. Slowly, fragments of cetaceans are emerging form different areas in Lanashuaia II. So it seems that our hypothesis of canoes meeting is practically consolidated. Now, the difficult part comes: Work!! We have to analyze all remains in our different laboratories.
A good souvenir
Even for those persons who love souvenirs, we have a good present: once cleaned, one of the long bones looks like as a sucking tube (drinking straw).
But the most important thing is that with all this information we can rebuild how Yamana people lived. We can do this through the work of the people who have participated in the excavation. These persons are:
Emiliano Araujo; Edgard Camarós; Jorge Caro; Emiliano Cena; Fernanda Day; Mariapía Filippelli; Stina Gröebdal; Adriana Lacrouts; Nélida Pal; Lorena Salvatelli; Rocío Scalice; Carolina Silva; Sofia Tecce; Luisa Vietri; Karina Zuccala.
It is impossible to conclude this research diary without re-reading the Darwin’s papers. There is one passage that caught my attention. Or better said, it was strange for me that Darwin was not surprised of his own words. The fragment that talks about the Aoenikenk (Tehuelche) people from the Patagonia, says:
"(...) they are semi-civilized and its demoralization is proportional to its civilization. "
